Network Quality

Ping vs jitter vs packet loss

Ping, jitter, and packet loss describe different parts of connection quality. Reading them together helps you understand whether a problem is delay, unstable timing, or missing data.

Metric What it means What it feels like
Ping How long a request takes to go out and come back. Delay before a game action, click, or voice response reacts.
Jitter How much latency changes from moment to moment. Uneven calls, rubber-banding, stutters, or inconsistent response.
Packet loss How much data fails to reach its destination. Broken audio, dropped frames, failed actions, or interrupted streams.

Start with ping

If everything feels delayed, ping is the first metric to inspect. High ping means the network is slow to respond.

Then check jitter

If responsiveness comes and goes, jitter often explains why the same connection feels smooth one second and rough the next.

Finally check packet loss

If calls break up or actions disappear, packet loss is often a better clue than raw speed.
